Construction of Tesla's energy storage megafactory in Shanghai will begin in May

Construction of Tesla's megafactory in Shanghai, designed to produce powerful Megapack energy storage batteries, is scheduled to begin in May. Mass production is expected to start by the first quarter of 2025.

This will be Tesla's first energy storage facility outside the United States. It will be located in the Lingang area of the pilot free trade zone. The factory will be able to produce up to 10 thousand Megapacks per year.

Megapack is a large-sized battery. It is designed to stabilize the power grid and prevent interruptions in its operation. Each Megapack unit can store more than 3.9 megawatt-hours of energy. Moreover, a cluster of 200 Megapack units can store 1 million kilowatt-hours, which is enough to power San Francisco for six hours.

Since 2015, Tesla has positioned itself in the energy storage industry. Its energy storage products operate in more than 65 countries and regions worldwide, with a total capacity exceeding 10 gigawatt-hours. In 2023, the company's profit from sales of energy storage devices almost quadrupled.

At the moment, there is already a Tesla electric vehicle production facility in Shanghai.
