Conditions and Formats for the Creation of a UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin Discussed in Ashgabat

From November 30 to December 1, 2024, Ashgabat hosted a Regional Consultative Meeting of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to discuss the establishment of a UN Special Program for the countries of the Aral Sea Basin.

The proposal to create a UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin was initially put forward in 2012 by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. At the 79th ESCAP session held in Bangkok in May 2023, a resolution titled “Consideration of Conditions for the Establishment of a UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin” was unanimously adopted at the initiative of Turkmenistan, providing the foundation for this meeting.

The event brought together representatives of ministries and agencies from Central Asian countries, the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, specialized UN agencies, as well as experts in water resources, natural disasters, and climate issues.

The primary objective of the meeting was to assess the current progress and identify new opportunities for strengthening regional cooperation on water resources and disaster management in the Aral Sea Basin through the proposed UN Special Program for the Aral Sea.

Participants discussed the conditions and formats for the establishment of the UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin.

As a result of the meeting, further actions were agreed upon. The adopted document will be presented at the 81st ESCAP session, which will take place in Bangkok from April 21 to 25, 2025.
