On November 30, 2024, on the sidelines of the fifth meeting of foreign ministers in the "Central Asia – China" format, a meeting took place between Turkmenistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi, in Chengdu, Sichuan Province (PRC).
During the meeting, the foreign ministers expressed satisfaction with the fruitful nature of the interstate dialogue, which is built on the principles of mutually beneficial partnership. The dynamic development of bilateral relations is facilitated by regular contacts at the highest, governmental, and interagency levels. In this regard, the parties discussed the implementation of previously reached bilateral agreements.
It was noted that the meeting provided a valuable opportunity to exchange views on the current state of Turkmen-Chinese friendly relations, which are of a comprehensive strategic nature. The ministers emphasized that the Turkmen-Chinese Intergovernmental Committee on Cooperation serves as an effective mechanism for interstate interaction.
The diplomats also highlighted the productivity of the multilateral dialogue between Turkmenistan and China within international and regional organizations. The effectiveness of the "Central Asia – China" format was particularly emphasized. In this context, the parties discussed preparations for the second summit of heads of state in the "Central Asia – China" format, scheduled to be held in 2025 in Astana.
The foreign ministers acknowledged the effective cooperation in the trade and economic sphere, reviewed the progress of joint activities in energy, transport and communication connectivity, and cultural and humanitarian cooperation.
At the conclusion of the meeting, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China for 2025–2026.
