A new educational guide titled “A Collection of Works for Accordion” by Honored Cultural Worker of Turkmenistan, senior lecturer at the Department of Folk Instruments of the Maya Kulyyeva Turkmen National Conservatory, H. Muhammetgulyyev, has recently been published (Ashgabat: Turkmen State Publishing Service). This guide features compositions by Turkmen composers and traditional Turkmen melodies arranged for accordion. It is intended for students of specialized music and arts schools, as well as higher educational institutions with a focus on music.
The guide begins with an extensive introduction discussing the history and structure of the accordion. The introduction also proudly mentions the names of teachers who have contributed to the training of accordion and bayan specialists in Turkmenistan, as well as renowned Turkmen singers and performers who have played this instrument. Following the introduction, explanations of the symbols used in the collection are provided in three languages: Turkmen, English, and Russian.
The collection includes works arranged for accordion by H. Muhammetgulyyev, such as: “Prelude,” “Ballad,” and “The Sound of the Dutar” by N. Halmammedov; “Rainbow” by B. Khudaynazarov; “Nazlim” by R. Nepesov; “Spring Dance” by A. Abdullayev; “Impromptu-Fantasy” by Ch. Nurymov; “Mother” by I. Haydarov; A. Agajykov’s arrangement of the Turkmen folk melody “Durdy Bagshy”; Traditional Turkmen melodies “Söýli Halan” and “Ýylgaýlar”; “Pyragy” by Y. Nurgeldiyev; “Concertino” by G. Kulyyev; “Fantasy on Turkmen Themes” by G. Kulyyev and S. Mammedov.Additionally, the collection features works arranged for accordion by T. Yuzeyeva, including: “Elegy,” “Rondo” (from “Moments,” third notebook), “Dutar” (fourth section of symphonic impressions “Turkmenistan”), “Elegiac Prelude and Fugue” (dedicated to Y. Khudaiberdiev); “Spring Etude” by V. Abayev (from “Children’s Suite”). Furthermore, H. Muhammetgulyyev, in collaboration with G. Babaniazova, arranged B. Khudaynazarov’s “Toccata” for accordion, and with M. Batyrov, transcribed “Durdy Bagshy” (a Turkmen folk melody) noted by Ö. Gandymov. The collection concludes with a concert piece for accordion by D. Nuryyev.
This educational guide serves as a valuable resource not only for students learning to play the accordion but also for musicologists and instructors interested in the instrument’s history and performance techniques.
