DEVELOPMENT OF TURKMENISTAN-MALAYSIA COOPERATION IN EDUCATION: NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
Malaysia is one of Turkmenistan's key partners in the Asia-Pacific region. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on May 17, 1992, and since then, they have demonstrated dynamic development. Over nearly three decades of interaction, valuable experience in mutually beneficial cooperation has been accumulated across various fields, including economy, education, science, and culture.
Cooperation between Turkmenistan and Malaysia in the field of education represents a vital direction of bilateral relations, grounded in mutual respect and shared interests. This collaboration strengthens academic ties, enhances the quality of education, and facilitates the integration of international expertise into Turkmenistan's educational system.
The foundation of this partnership has been laid through agreements, including the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Higher Education (2014) and agreements between the International University of Oil and Gas named after Yagshygeldi Kakayev, the PETRONAS Technological University, and other institutions. These documents have enabled the establishment of exchange programs for students and faculty, professional training courses, and scientific initiatives.
Numerous significant initiatives have been implemented in 2023–2024:
This cooperation is of strategic importance to Turkmenistan's educational system. It provides access to advanced teaching methodologies, promotes the adoption of innovative technologies and standards, and prepares qualified specialists for key economic sectors. Joint educational projects stimulate the development of research activities, ensuring the integration of Turkmenistan's national education system into the global educational landscape.
More than two hundred of Turkmen students are currently studying at Malaysian universities, highlighting their keen interest in accessing international education opportunities.
The official visit of the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, to Malaysia reaffirms the commitment of both nations to further strengthen their traditional relations. This visit represents a pivotal step in deepening the bilateral ties established in previous years by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
Particular attention during the visit is being devoted to the reinforcement of the legal and contractual framework for cooperation. High-level negotiations provide a platform for fortifying the partnership, initiating new projects, and advancing the educational system of Turkmenistan.
The development of a partnership with Malaysia offers Turkmenistan new opportunities to implement cutting-edge educational technologies, exchange expertise, and prepare human resources for high-tech industries. Considering Malaysia's substantial industrial and technological potential, the deepening of this cooperation aligns with the interests of both countries.
Today, the visit of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to Malaysia, accompanied by a warm reception and constructive negotiations, marks a new chapter in the history of Turkmenistan-Malaysia relations, grounded in mutual respect, trust, and strategic partnership.
