The textbook is aimed at students studying sports journalism to teach them the specific features of sports photojournalism. It provides guidance on writing sports articles and decorating them with photos, explains the types of sports photojournalism, and analyzes the presentation of sports photo reports in Turkmen newspapers and magazines. The textbook “Sports Photojournalism,” prepared by Shamuhammet Nepesov, head of the Science Department of the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Education and Sports, was published by the “Science” publishing house and is intended for students studying journalism.
The main goal of the course is for students to master the specifics of sports photojournalism at a high level, learn how to create sports photographs, place them in print media, and study the versatility of a sports photojournalist’s work. It also focuses on a detailed analysis of sports photographs and shots featured in newspapers and magazines in Turkmenistan as well as foreign publications. The textbook consists of an introduction and sections such as: “The Purpose and Objectives of the Subject ‘Sports Photojournalism’”, “The History of Photography”, “General Information from the History of Photojournalism”, “Photojournalism in Turkmen Press”, “From the History of Turkmen Press”, “The Role of Sports in Society”, “Sports as a Direction in Photojournalism”, “The First Sports Newspapers and Magazines”, “Turkmen Sports Photojournalists”, “Help for Sports Photojournalists: How to Photograph Sports Competitions?”, “Peculiarities of Photographing Depending on Sports Types”, “Internet and Sports Photojournalism”, “Genres of Sports Photojournalism”, “Photo Labs: Their Use in Print Media and Internet Sites”, “Sports Photojournalism and Ethics”, and a list of references.
Thanks to the farsighted domestic and foreign policy of Hero Arkadag and Hero Arkadagly Serdar, our country has become a venue for international sports competitions. Studying journalism related to sports and photography as a separate discipline has become deserving of attention for highlighting such events using modern methods of sports photojournalism. The course “Sports Photojournalism” is taught at leading higher and specialized educational institutions worldwide.
The regular publication of such manuals and textbooks provides significant opportunities for students in this field and future specialists to improve their professional skills, study sciences at a more advanced level, acquire new important knowledge, and enhance their level of preparedness.
