Today, with the participation of the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, a new International Airport near the town of Jebel in Balkan Province was officially commissioned. The airport has a passenger throughput capacity of 100 people per hour. It was built by the private construction company “Gündogdy” — known for its extensive experience in constructing complex strategic transport infrastructure — on the order of the “Türkmenhowaýollary” Agency.
The airport is located 20 km northwest of the city of Balkanabat and just 4 km from the “Mollagara” mud therapy resort, making access much easier for those in need of treatment.
This marks the revival of the main artery of the historic Great Silk Road, Amul–Khazar, in the form of an air corridor connecting Turkmenabat–Ashgabat–Balkanabat–Turkmenbashi, stretching across the country from east to west. Near the new airport, the Ashgabat–Turkmenbashi highway and railway line also pass. Plans are in place for the construction of a new Jebel railway station in the future.
Convenient interchanges and road links create new conditions for the development of transport and logistics and for diversifying access to global markets. As a result, transit air passengers will now be able to conveniently transfer between different modes of transportation, while reducing departure and cargo delivery times to a minimum. The airport’s cargo terminal has a handling capacity of 200 tons.
