Strategies for Higher Education Institutions: Pathways to Success in QS and THE Rankings

On September 19-20, 2024, Tashkent hosted a pivotal international seminar at the Alisher Navoi State University of Uzbek Language and Literature, organized as part of the European Union’s Erasmus+ program in collaboration with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovations. The hybrid event, titled "Pathways for Universities to Participate in International QS and THE Rankings," focused on exploring strategies for enhancing universities' global standing in prestigious educational rankings.

The hybrid seminar drew participation from professors, lecturers, and students from Turkmenistan’s leading universities. Engaged in discussions on university ranking systems and educational quality, the Turkmen delegates shared their expertise and outlined new avenues for collaboration aimed at strengthening their institutions' presence in global rankings. This collaboration is set to advance Turkmenistan’s educational landscape, broaden students' understanding of the international academic environment, and encourage greater participation in global competitions.

Throughout the event, international experts, including representatives from Erasmus+ in Uzbekistan and senior figures from globally ranked universities, shared their insights. They outlined actionable strategies for universities to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and emphasized the advantages of being featured in QS and THE rankings.

The seminar’s opening ceremony featured remarks from Uzbekistan’s Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovations, Shakhruh Daliyev, along with Aziza Abdurahmanova, representative of the Erasmus+ program in Uzbekistan, and Diyar Umarov, head of the Ministry's International Cooperation Department. They underscored the significance of international cooperation and the role of universities in securing positions in the global rankings.

In a keynote address, Dublin University professor Ellen Hazelkorn delivered an in-depth analysis of international university rankings, explaining their criteria, inherent challenges, and the broader impact of such rankings on educational quality. Her presentation drew on extensive experience in elevating academic standards worldwide.

This seminar was conducted under the umbrella of the European Union’s Technical Assistance Program (TAM), which focuses on supporting the modernization of higher education institutions. TAM facilitates this mission through seminars, conferences, and collaborative meetings. The discussions at the event led to the identification of new opportunities for collaboration, with Turkmen representatives setting clear goals to enhance education quality and elevate their universities’ standing in global rankings. The seminar's outcomes are expected to foster new initiatives and projects that will positively impact the future development of the education sector.
