The stage of the National Musical Drama Theatre named after Magtymguly once again became a resonant platform for understanding the fundamental, nationwide principles of state policy through the medium of art. The recent concert, titled “Ode to Neutrality – A Destan on the Lips of the Nation,” dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent Neutrality, not only presented the audience with magnificent works by the People’s Artist of Turkmenistan, composer Chary Nurymov, but also vividly demonstrated how his rich symphonic legacy harmonizes with modern values of peace and good neighborliness.
The celebratory event opened with the composer’s piece, “Destan-Concerto,” which, performed by pianist Agajan Amadov and the Chamber Orchestra of the M. Kuliyeva Turkmen National Conservatory under the direction of Nury Muhyyev, became an excellent example of the masterful execution of classical music. The high passages of the piano and the gentle breath of the string instruments revealed not only the music but also the philosophical theme of tranquility and inner strength.
Next, the Third Movement of the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra was performed—one of the composer’s most substantive and renowned works. The performance by Ashyr Ashyrov, a laureate of the “Golden age of Turkmen” competition, with the orchestra was distinguished by its skill and emotional expressiveness.
Song lyricism held a special place in the concert. The song “Armanym galdy”, set to the verses of Magtymguly Pyragy, was profoundly performed by Yusup Atayev and the Chamber Orchestra, showcasing the harmony of high poetry and deep musical intonation. This is not just a song, but an expression of the national spirit, conveying unfulfilled dreams and a belief in eternal beauty. “Toý aýdymy”, performed by Palvanmyrat Bakyyev and Chynar Gultyyeva, uplifted the audience, demonstrating the multifaceted nature of the composer’s talent.
The Chamber Orchestra, led by Kovus Bashimov, presented the “Festive Overture.” In this piece, the conductor’s mastery transformed every note into a hymn to creation and optimism, fully aligning with the spirit of the celebration.
The climax of the Chamber Orchestra’s performance was the work “Türkmenistan — gözel mekan”. Performed by the “Mukam” violinists’ ensemble (artistic director Harold Neymark), pianist Maya Maksudova, and dutar player Aymyrat Saparmyradov, this piece became a clear lesson in harmoniously blending the sound of classical strings with national instrumental traditions, creating a unified musical image of the flourishing Motherland.
The evening concluded with the Third Symphony “Maru-Shahu-Jahan,” reaffirming the monumental significance of the composer’s work. This large-scale canvas, performed by the TNC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Dovletmammet Okdirov, served as a magnificent epilogue and emphasized the musical master’s philosophical scope—his ability to translate historical themes into the language of eternity.
This concert was a vivid testament to the respect for the memory of Chary Nurymov. It confidently proves that permanent Neutrality is not merely a political term but a national philosophy firmly rooted in culture. Nurymov’s music, filled with dignity, generosity, and kindness, acts as a bridge between the classical and the contemporary, asserting peace and creation as the distinctive feature of the Turkmen character and its artistic symbol. The sustained applause in the hall was dedicated not only to the performers but also to the eternal idea embedded in the Master’s legacy.
