Turkmenistan participated in the 28th meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO)

On December 3, 2024, a delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, A. Gurbanov, participated in the 28th meeting of the ECO Council of Foreign Ministers, held in the city of Mashhad, Islamic Republic of Iran.
The meeting was attended by the heads of foreign ministries of ECO member states, leaders of regional organizations, as well as representatives from specialized institutions, regional bodies, and structural units of ECO.
Participants discussed a wide range of topics aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, the "green" economy, digitalization, energy, food security, ecology, agriculture, and transport. Proposals for further developing trade and economic relations, including finding new paths for economic growth within the ECO region, were considered.
During the meeting, the work program of the Council was approved, reports on the activities of the Secretariat and specialized ECO bodies were adopted, the budget for 2025 was confirmed, and a summary of Iran's presidency in the ECO was presented. The presidency for 2025 will be passed to the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In his speech, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, A. Gurbanov, emphasized that the conceptual documents "ECO Vision 2025" and the "Ashgabat Consensus for Action" have created a solid platform for adapting to new realities and set clear guidelines for future joint actions. In this context, Turkmenistan's position on the priority areas of cooperation within the ECO was presented, along with proposals for the organization's development strategy.
The importance of enhancing cooperation in transport, logistics, and the energy sector was highlighted. Expanding industrial cooperation by establishing production lines and utilizing the potential of cross-border and regional trade, with a focus on fostering small and medium-sized business partnerships, was also discussed. The significance of combining efforts to ensure food security and aligning the efforts of the ECO and the international community to develop constructive models for interstate relations was underscored.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Mashhad Communiqué was adopted, outlining strategic initiatives and practical steps to strengthen multi-faceted regional cooperation.
It is also important to note that on the sidelines of the 28th ECO Council of Ministers meeting, a meeting took place between the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, A. Gurbanov, and the Secretary-General of ECO, Asad Majid Khan.
The Secretary-General of ECO acknowledged Turkmenistan's growing role within the organization and expressed satisfaction with the country’s hosting of several significant regional and international events. Asad Majid Khan proposed initiatives to improve ECO’s efficiency and urged Turkmenistan to support these efforts.
During the meeting, issues related to the development of the region’s potential and Turkmenistan's initiatives in tourism and transport were discussed. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing the goals of ECO and strengthening regional cooperation in the coming year.
Additionally, on December 2, a meeting of senior officials of the Economic Cooperation Organization was held in Mashhad to prepare for the 28th ECO Council of Ministers (COM).
