On December 6, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the latest meeting of the Strategic Advisory Council "Turkmenistan–UN," where prospects for bilateral cooperation in priority areas were discussed.
Strengthening multifaceted relations with the United Nations has been and remains one of the key directions of Turkmenistan's foreign policy, aimed at broad international cooperation in the interests of global sustainable development.
For many years, the leading agencies and structural units of this major and authoritative organization have been long-term, strategic partners in implementing large-scale socio-economic development programs in our country.
To intensify and coordinate joint efforts, the Strategic Advisory Council "Turkmenistan–UN" was established in March this year with the support of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. It has become a platform for developing new effective approaches to expanding the traditional dialogue.
During the meeting, the projects of programs and relevant documents for developing bilateral partnerships were discussed. These included the Framework Program for Cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN in the field of sustainable development for 2026–2030; the Joint UN Agency Program "Youth, Peace, and Security"; and Joint Programs with UN structures in Turkmenistan in areas such as education, healthcare, "green" energy, and digitalization.
A Roadmap for strengthening SDG reporting in Turkmenistan for 2025–2027 was also approved. It was developed by the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan in collaboration with relevant ministries and industry departments to introduce comprehensive approaches and positive experiences in implementing the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development at the national level until 2030.
Key topics on the meeting agenda included the work of the UN Center for Climate Technology in Central Asia, Turkmenistan's achievements in implementing the SDGs, and the exchange of necessary data. In this regard, the possibility of providing information on the country's sustainable development successes, which is crucial for reports prepared by the UN Development Program (UNDP), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), was discussed.
After discussing the priority areas of upcoming activities and the main events planned for 2025, designated as the International Year of Peace and Trust on Turkmenistan's initiative, UN representatives thanked the Turkmen side for its significant efforts and constructive approach in building trust-based and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Participants expressed confidence that Turkmenistan's proactive stance would continue to contribute to the successful implementation of new joint projects and programs, advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which have been among the first in the world to be adapted at the national level.
