Turkmenistan and Georgia Discuss Prospects for Cooperation in Education, Science and Youth Policy

On 1 September 2026, a meeting was held at the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan between Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Batyr Mammedov and Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia Givi Mikanadze.

The current visit of the Georgian delegation to Turkmenistan is a continuation of the dialogue held in Tbilisi in July this year within the framework of the official visit of President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov to Georgia.

During the meeting, it was noted that relations between Turkmenistan and Georgia have traditionally been based on friendship and mutual respect. Education, science and youth policy occupy an important place in bilateral cooperation.

The sides discussed expanding direct ties between educational and scientific institutions of the two countries, the practical implementation of previously reached agreements, the development of academic mobility, joint educational and research programmes, as well as exchanges between teachers, academic staff and students.

The Turkmen side presented information on ongoing reforms in higher and general secondary education, the introduction of digital technologies and artificial intelligence into the educational process, the development of scientific research and the strengthening of links between education, science, industry and the labour market.

Particular attention was paid to expanding international cooperation in higher education, developing direct university-to-university partnerships, academic mobility and joint research projects.

The Georgian side put forward a number of initiatives aimed at strengthening practical cooperation. In particular, it proposed expanding opportunities for Turkmen students to study at Georgian higher education institutions, holding an educational exhibition of Georgian universities in Turkmenistan, exploring possibilities for supporting and financing joint scientific projects, and considering the establishment of a branch of a Georgian higher education institution in Turkmenistan.

In the field of youth cooperation, the sides discussed the organization of reciprocal summer camps in Turkmenistan and Georgia, the expansion of student exchanges, meetings of young researchers, and the implementation of joint educational, scientific and innovation projects.

The sides also emphasized the importance of intensifying cooperation within the framework of previously signed bilateral documents in the field of education and ensuring the consistent implementation of the agreements contained therein.

Special attention was given to the establishment of a Turkmen–Georgian Working Group on Cooperation in Education. The Working Group is expected to operate at the level of the deputy ministers of education of the two countries, consider concrete joint initiatives and projects, and coordinate the implementation of agreements reached between the sides.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the sides confirmed their readiness to further develop mutually beneficial cooperation in education, science and youth policy, expand direct contacts between relevant institutions and implement concrete joint initiatives.

The meeting was held in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.
