The State Publishing Service of Turkmenistan has published a new textbook entitled “English Linguistics” for students of higher education institutions. The authors of the textbook are L. Geldiyeva, M. Abdyyewa, and Sh. Kadyrova.
The textbook is aimed at developing students’ comprehensive understanding of language as a system and linguistics as a scientific discipline, as well as enhancing the academic, analytical, and professional competencies of future specialists in English.
The textbook provides a systematic overview of the main branches of linguistics. The initial sections introduce the concepts of language, speech and written communication, language families, linguistics as a science, and its major branches. Particular attention is given to English phonetics and phonology, including the articulatory system, the classification of speech sounds, phonetic transcription, phonological variation, and prosodic features.
In addition, the textbook presents key concepts and learning materials in morphology, syntax, and semantics. The theoretical material is reinforced through various practical exercises designed to deepen students’ linguistic knowledge, develop their skills in analysing language phenomena, and help them apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.
The textbook is intended to support the in-depth study of English and linguistics, develop students’ analytical abilities, and foster the professional competencies required of future specialists in foreign language teaching, linguistics, and translation.
