For the 2026/2027 academic year, 500 state-funded university spots in the Russian Federation have been allocated to citizens of Turkmenistan
The Russian government has allocated a quota of 500 state-funded spots at Russian universities for citizens of Turkmenistan for the 2026/2027 academic year. This was announced by the Russian Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Ivan Volynkin, in an interview with the press office of the International Literary Contest “Russky Glagol”.
According to the diplomat, there is a very high level of interest among Turkmen youth in Russian education. He noted that proficiency in the Russian language, acquired as early as one’s school years, serves as a major advantage when applying for admission. "For a first-year student encountering lectures, academic articles, and exams in a language they already know, it is easier to focus on their field of study without having to simultaneously overcome a language barrier while also tackling a new discipline," Volynkin explained.
As the ambassador noted, language also helps in everyday life: students make friends more quickly and feel like part of the student community, which makes the adaptation process significantly easier.
Volynkin explained that a Russian degree opens up broad prospects in medicine, engineering, information technology, economics, international relations, and the humanities. Students have the opportunity to participate in research projects, complete internships, and build professional networks; meanwhile, most return home to apply their knowledge for the benefit of their own country, he added.
The Ambassador also spoke about the work of the Russian House in Ashgabat, which hosts roundtables, online seminars, and other events throughout the year regarding the admission process for Russian universities. In October, it held an open meeting between representatives of several leading Moscow universities and high school students from the A. S. Pushkin Joint Russian-Turkmen Secondary School.
