A Roadmap for 2025-2026 has been adopted to strengthen Turkmenistan's international cooperation to achieve the goals and objectives set out in the Global Methane Commitment

On November 1, 2024, during a regular meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, a Roadmap for 2025-2026 was adopted to strengthen international cooperation of Turkmenistan to achieve the goals and objectives provided for by the Global Methane Commitment. A set of measures has been developed and approved for the practical implementation of the Roadmap.

During the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-26), held in November 2021, Turkmenistan expressed interest in a detailed study of the Global Methane Commitment initiative.

The Government of Turkmenistan has carried out comprehensive work, including in the international field, in this direction. In particular, in June 2023, by a Decree of the President of Turkmenistan, the Roadmap for 2023-2024 for the development of international cooperation aimed at studying the issue of Turkmenistan's accession to the Global Methane Commitment was approved, and an Intersectoral Commission on Reducing Methane Emissions was established.

According to the results of the work carried out, at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28), held in Dubai (UAE) from November 30 to December 12, 2023, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov officially announced the country's accession to the Global Methane Commitment.

Of particular importance is the adoption of the above-mentioned new Roadmap and a Set of measures to implement it in the context of putting into practice the obligations arising from the Global Methane Commitment.

The Roadmap reaffirms Turkmenistan's firm intention to reduce methane emissions by 2030 through the radical modernization of energy infrastructure and the implementation of other appropriate measures, thereby contributing to the efforts of the world community in this area.

The document provides for close cooperation with international partners, in particular, with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, other specialized agencies of the United Nations, the European Union, OSCE, IRENA, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, USAID, the United States of America, EU countries, etc.

At the same time, Turkmenistan attaches great importance to direct participation in the activities of the MARS digital platform, created within the framework of the United Nations Environment Programme.

In order to implement the Roadmap, a set of measures to reduce methane emissions in 2025-2026 is also planned. These include: holding scientific and practical conferences, round tables, seminars, etc., together with various international organizations, continuing cooperation with foreign companies to solve the tasks set in this area, drawing up feasibility studies for projects on processing and using associated gas through the introduction of innovative and energy-saving technologies, etc.
